Hola! My name is Toni Hazlip (formerly Toni Anaya) and I have been
reading Baldo comics since I first saw it in the Denver Post about 5
years ago. I dropped the newspaper, but read your comic faithfully every day on Yahoo!Comics. When I read today’s comic, I had to comment
as it bothered me fiercely.
I am a proud keeper of 3 black cats and have been owned by 5 others in
my lifetime. To portray black cats as being bad luck or evil is the
reason why I’ve adopted 3 black cats and have had 5 others in my
lifetime. Black cats have been maligned throughout the ages and for
your comic strip to continue this stupid false negativity is every cat
rescuers’ nightmare. Every year, thousands and thousands of black cats
are euthanized humanely in shelters all over the nation and an uncounted
more are tortured to death every Halloween, all because of their color.
Black cats are the hardest of all cats to get adopted out, mainly
because of this ridiculous stereotype. I thought that your comic strip,
which I did enjoy, seem to be over stereotyping, but today’s comic was
more in line with Boondocks with negativity. I’m not one of those
“Ziggy” type comic lovers as my all-time favorite comic strip (other
than Garfield) is “The Far Side”, which is far more twisted than
anything your strip has ever come up with.
I’m not sure if I will continue to read your comic strip. I’m hoping
that perhaps, in some way, you can recant your horrible strip today in
tomorrow’ strip (I know that they have to be at their publishers about 3
weeks in advance) or in some other way.

I would also watch out if it had a white stripe down its back.
